Pulse is taking a breather. Check back tomorrow.
A daily game about the numbers Britain argues about. One question, one guess, then see how close you were and how far off everyone else was. More
What is Pulse?
Everyone argues about immigration, the NHS, crime and public spending, but hardly anyone knows the actual numbers. Pulse asks one of them each day. You get one guess, then see the official figure and what everyone else guessed.
- It takes 20 seconds. One question, one number, one go.
- The reveal is the fun bit. The whole country is often miles out, and sometimes you are too.
- Everyone gets the same question. Share your result without spoiling it and see who got closest.
- No side is taken. Every answer is an official figure with its source linked, and topics rotate across the political spectrum.
Pulse is inspired by Ipsos's Perils of Perception research, which found people in Britain consistently misjudge figures like these. A new question goes live every day at midnight.
How it's scored
- Bullseye: within 10% of the real figure
- Close: within 25%
- Ballpark: between half and double
- Way off: more than double, or less than half
Every figure comes from an official published source such as the ONS, the House of Commons Library, government departments or the NHS, and is linked on the answer screen. The "typical guess" is the median of everyone who has played today.
